| ALAN JACKSON ISSUES GOSPEL ALBUM |
|
Three-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Alan Jackson originally recorded the vintage hymns on Precious Memories (ACR/Arista Nashville) as a Christmas gift to his mother. But the performances were so inspirational and moving that the project took on a life of its own, and now Memories will be released this week as a full-scale project.

It features stirring Jackson renditions of such songs as "I'll Fly Away," "The Old Rugged Cross," "In The Garden," "Standing On The Promises" and "Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus," which also has vocals from Jackson's wife Denise and two of his daughters.
The CD's release follows tonight's concert at the Ryman Auditorium, 116 Fifth Ave. This event is being taped for forthcoming broadcast on the Great American Country (GAC) network and also will be issued on DVD. If any tickets still remain for tonight's event, they may be purchased at the Ryman box office.
Other notable releases this week include Shannon Brown's Corn Fed (Warner Bros. Nashville), Michel Camilo's Rhapsody in Blue (Telarc), Cyrus Chestnut's Genuine Chestnut (Telarc), Elvis Costello and the Metropole Orchestra's My Flame Turns Blue (Deutsche Grammophon), Hawthorne Heights' If Only You Were Lonely (Victory), Kid Rock's Live Trucker (Atlantic), Carmen Lundy's Jazz and the New Songbook and Live At The Madrid (both Afrasia), Rhett Miller's The Believer (Verve), Bob Mintzer Big Band's Old School, New Lessons (MCG Jazz), Ne-Yo's In My Own Words (Def Jam), Tom Scott's Bebop United, and Hank Williams III's Straight To Hell (Curb).
DVD of the week
With the Oscars coming this weekend, if you missed the tremendous performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in Walk The Line, this week the DVD of Walk The Line (Widescreen Edition) (20th Century Fox) will be released. Extra features include 10 deleted scenes and a commentary from co-writer and director James Mangold.
Though Phoenix was least effective during the musical and concert sequences, he made up for it with outstanding acting in every other situation. Witherspoon's portrayal of June Carter was exceptional, and both earned Oscar nominations. As with last year's Ray, this should not be viewed as a definitive biography, for it neither covers his entire career nor sticks completely with factual material that's been presented in numerous Cash biographies. But it is a captivating, excellently acted and directed work that accurately spotlights the scope of Cash's early achievements and his rise to music icon status.
Other key releases this week include Pride & Prejudice (Widescreen and Full Screen Editions) (MCA), Lady and the Tramp (50th Anniversary Edition) (Walt Disney), Charmed-The Complete Fourth Season (Paramount), Bleak House (BBC Warner), Newsradio-The Complete Third Season (Sony), NFL Super Bowl XL-Pittsburgh Steelers Championship DVD (Warner), Where The Truth Lies (Unrated Theatrical Edition) (Sony), Ellen-The Complete Season Three (A&E), and Roy Orbison: In Dreams (White Star).
